About

For over 20 years, Phil Frank designed and developed orthopedic implants that improved the way broken bones healed and arthritic joints moved.  He’s a Mechanical Engineer with over a dozen patents and has always looked for challenges that would help him learn and
grow.

What began as a hobby grew into a passion.  Designing and building custom furniture and other woodcraft projects became an enriching outlet for Phil's creative side.  His values of making things work and problem solving soon became more deeply engaged as a woodworker than the increasingly corporate lifestyle he experienced as an Engineer.  Enter Green Flannel Woodcraft built on the skills and experience Phil began to cultivate after he and his wife Kristi moved into their Maplewood home in 2003.

As the Frank’s set down roots in Maplewood and began building their family, Phil found no shortage of challenges to keep their 1925 home in working order.
The tools he acquired to keep the deck from collapsing and the roof from leaking were soon put to use building more original things from wood to add to their home.  He built entryway storage with shelves and coat rack. For his wife, he built a wall-mounted accessory organizer and his daughters got jewelry boxes. Phil built a new coffee table for the living room and his mother-in-law got a new cutting board in Maple, walnut and cherry shaped to look like a setting sun.

The shop grew as Phil's skills grew and the projects got more complex.  There was a nightstand for his youngest, outdoor tables for the patio and a kitchen island for his neighbors.  He was commissioned for his first piece in 2017 after someone admired the coffee table in their home and wanted one of their own.  As his kids grew more independent, he filled the extra time by taking courses, reading books and watching videos all dedicated to woodworking. These days, you’re more likely to find him in his basement shop than anywhere else.

“Follow your passions” someone once said, and so he did.         Welcome to Green Flannel Woodcraft!
